Better Arms & Abs

Better Arms and Abs

Pilates efficiently improves abdominal strength, arm strength, and hamstring flexibility, according to one of the first scientific studies on the topic. When 50 physically active individuals were assigned to twice-weekly one-hour sessions of mat Pilates or instructed to maintain their regular workout routine for 12 weeks, those in the Pilates group had much greater increases in strength and flexibility, including a 39 percent increase in the number of sit-ups they could do in a minute and a 47 percent increase in the number of push-ups. Subjects’ height also increased, by about a centimeter. Study author June Kloubec, professor of nutrition and exercise science at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington, says that most people can do Pilates exercises at home after a month of classes, and it may not be necessary to do a full hour to derive the benefits
